Sitecore: System.InvalidOperationException: Ensure definition type did not complete successfully

I started getting this error this morning in my Sitecore logs:

System.InvalidOperationException: Ensure definition type did not complete successfully. StatusCode: 500, ReasonPhrase: ‘Internal Server Error’, Version: 1.1

I noticed this ‘cos analytics stopped working overnight:

What gives?

Well, looking into the XConnect logs I found errors of the form:

[Error] XConnect Web Application Error: “System.ApplicationException: Exception trying to intialize Service Collection and Provider for for WebAPI Dependency Resolver, Inner Exception: Required license is missing: Sitecore.xDB.Base —> Sitecore.Nexus.Licensing.LicenseException: Required license is missing: Sitecore.xDB.Base

Um, yeah, fair point. I updated my license in advance of expiry the other day – but only for the Sitecore site, not for XConnect. I updated my license.xml on the XConnect site and mysteriously it started working again <embarrassed />
