RSS Feed in Office 365

This is just a quick note – that annoyingly, there isn’t an RSS feed web part (that functions) in Office 365. Even more frustratingly, the RSS Viewer Web Part is available, it just doesn’t work. When you add it to a page, you get the warning:

Web Part or Web Form Control on this Page cannot be displayed or imported. The type is not registered as safe

This is discussed in KB2535012, the main thrust of it being:

This issue occurs because the RSS Viewer Web Part is not available in Office 365. This issue is scheduled to be resolved in a future version of Office 365.

In fairness, this restriction is mentioned in the SharePoint Online Release notes.

Control the RSS Feed Settings on an SPList via the API

Tobias Zimmergren tweeted today asking

Anyone got recommendations to how you modify RSS-Settings for an SPList object using the API?

Good question. The SPList object does have a property EnableSyndication that gets or sets whether an RSS feed is available. There is also an property ‘AllowRssFeeds’, but it is, apparently, read only.

Error: CQWP – RSS feed of non-documents doesn't work

This is a pretty weird error. I was doing content roll-up of Announcements lists, to give a unified news channel for our intranet. Naturally, I decided to do this using the Content Query Web Part. I added one, and selected that I wanted to query for the contents of Announcements lists. As I like RSS feeds, I enabled one, and I added it to my favorite feed-reader.

It worked – but the links to the announcements themselves didn’t work. The short summary is that is that it appears RSS feeds from Content Query Web Parts don’t work when you query for certain types of list. Continue reading “Error: CQWP – RSS feed of non-documents doesn't work” →
